Tiong Bahru, which translates to "new cemetery" from Hokkien and Malay, carries a rich historical background. Originally, this vibrant estate was known as 美人窝 (meirenwo) meaning "beauty nest," and 二奶村 (ernaicun) which translates to "mistress village," as it was a hub for prostitutes and the mistresses of wealthy men.

Today, Tiong Bahru has transformed into a lively locale featuring Tiong Bahru Plaza alongside various smaller shops, bookstores, and an array of stunning, unique buildings that are preserved for their architectural significance.
